here's sprocket hanging out by the wood that I was laying out to see if I had everything we needed. There's (8) 8' x 6" x 2" uncut boards for the long sides , (2) 8' x 6" x 2" cut to (4) pieces for the short sides, (2) 10' x 6" x 2" cut with 45 degree angles cut in the ends for the top lip, (2) 8' x 6" x 6" cut with 45 degree angles for the short sides of the top lip. (2) 8' x 2" x 2" cut to 8 pieces for the corner posts. Then finally some 8' x 1" x 2" for the inside bracing and slots. A few extra pieces from the 2"x2" were used for support of the lip.
Here's the removable divider made out of some thin scrap. We didn't worry about measuring too perfectly because no one will see the insides anyway, but we tried to center things for even support.
this is to show the support we included to keep the lips on top reinforced.
and here it is pretty much finished, we propped it up so it could be stained easier.

I just realized today, after pumping up my tires to 50 psi, that my average trip to work was 10 minutes less than the previous week. Since they were at 40 psi when I checked, I guess the equation would be 1 psi = 1 min. Wow.

No really, I know it's just a reason for family to get together. It reminds me of most holidays. Forget the reason for the day, and express the obligatory thanks for what we have.

Looking back on some of the horrible things that 'believers' did to people who didn't share their subscription to the mind virus called religion, I had a renewed appreciation for those who stand up and defend rationality in the face of those who would rather look forward to the end of the world-

My scientific colleagues have additional reasons to declare emergency. Ignorant and absolutist attacks on stem cell research are just the tip of an iceberg. What we have here is nothing less than a global assault on rationality, and the Enlightenment values that inspired the founding of this first and greatest of secular republics. Science education - and hence the whole future of science in this country - is under threat. Temporarily beaten back in a Pennsylvania court, the 'breathtaking inanity' (Judge John Jones's immortal phrase) of 'intelligent design' continually flares up in local bush-fires. Dowsing them is a time-consuming but important responsibility, and scientists are finally being jolted out of their complacency. For years they quietly got on with their science, lamentably underestimating the creationists who, being neither competent nor interested in science, attended to the serious political business of subverting local school boards. Scientists, and intellectuals generally, are now waking up to the threat from the American Taliban.

I told suzy last night that I'd need a ride this morning. It's been raining for about 2 days straight. I checked the radar and then hit the animation button and to my surprise there was a hole of fair weather surrounding us. So I biked to work and enjoyed the new squarepusher album along the way. I have taken for granted that infrastructure is in place to make my life more convienient. Just things like indoor temperature control would inspire anyone from even the recent past ( or other countries! ) into a state of wonder at how far technology will evolve. I live in the future.

American Traditions

If there are any habits that people in the united states have in general, they are infantile compared to practically every other country.

Most of the time I feel like I'm not part of any traditions. Definately, not any ancient ones.

There is a seductive allure to the mysteries that I imagine as ancient traditions.

I was looking at a lighter the other day, and it's brand name was "American Match".

It occured to me that one American tradition that I am trying to stay away from is excess.

The reason why the brand name triggered this thought was, the brand name itself implies that all other matches are just that, matches. But an American Match is a complex machine that, at a flick of the thumb, solves the problem of fire and is better than anyone else's match.
